Event Recap: Transforming Futures in Ikirun

On November 17, 2024, Pathshapers Africa hosted an inspiring event in the Federal Government College, Ikirun—a suburban, relatively rural area where many students had little to no exposure to cutting-edge technologies or career opportunities. This event was designed to showcase the power of skill-building, career exposure, and innovation in unlocking the full potential of African high school students.

Highlights from the Event

Career Fair Success

  • Engaging Over 1,000 Students: Students experienced firsthand what a modern career fair can be. They had direct, one-on-one interactions with over 40 working professionals from top companies in fields they had never before encountered.
  • New Horizons: For many students, this was the first time learning about career paths in technology, finance, and other industries—opening up new dreams and ambitions.

Extracurricular Competitions & Training

  • Chess Competition: Over 100 students encountered a chess board for the first time. The competition not only tested their strategic skills but also ignited an interest in the game.
  • Debate Training: Using the British Parliamentary Debate format, 30+ students were trained intensively over two weeks. This segment built their critical thinking, verbal communication, and confidence.
  • Arts & Storytelling: Students painted their future dreams and shared the stories behind them. This creative exercise allowed them to envision and articulate their aspirations.
  • Tech & Innovation Workshops: In specialized sessions on design, machine learning, and basic programming, more than 30 students gained hands-on skills.

Total Cash Prizes Awarded

  • ₦1.1 million to 9 winners
  • ₦850,000 to 7 winners
  • ₦650,000 to 3 winners

Inspiring Success in Robotics

  • The event marked a major milestone for one local school. Their robotics team—previously limited by resources and lacking a functional laptop until our donation last year—went on to win the Nigerian National Robotics Lego Competition on January 27, 2025. They are now set to represent Nigeria in Texas, USA later in 2025.
